A lot of people see December as a write-off when it comes to the job search.
I completely understand why.
Companies start to slow down.
There are fewer opportunities coming through.
We are all getting ready to take a break.
It is natural to just want to get to the festive period,
spend time with family,
and stop worrying about the future for a few weeks.
While pausing to reflect is good, stopping completely puts you at a disadvantage.
January is a double-edged sword.
Yes, new budgets open up and companies come back with more vigour.
But you also face the “New Year, New Career” crowd.
Thousands of people make resolutions to change jobs meaning the candidate pool explodes in size.
If you want to beat that competition, you need to use December to prepare.
Here is your checklist to ensure you are set up for success:
1. Determine your target
Take time to consider exactly what roles you want.
Identify your transferable skills and your non-negotiables.
Clarity now saves time later.
2. Set up your infrastructure
Create job alerts on LinkedIn and job boards for the companies you want to join.
When those January roles go live, you need to be the first to know.
3. Refresh the CV
Look at your experience over the last year.
Does your CV reflect your recent wins?
If you have been in the market for a while without results, now is the time to change your approach.
4. Prepare interview scenarios
This might feel strange when you don’t have the interview yet.
But planning your answers and examples now will stop you feeling overwhelmed next month.
If you take these steps now, you will be a step ahead of the huge intake of candidates in the new year.
You can then enjoy the festive spirit knowing you are ready to go.
If you need support getting set up, I have a few slots left for December.
My diary is also open for January if you prefer to wait.
Have a great December and enjoy the Festive Spirit!
