Last week, I hosted a webinar focused on how to become a top-tier candidate in the current climate.

I know many of you couldn't make it, so I wanted to share the high-level details here.

The goal is to give you the same advantages as those who attended as I understand how frustrating the current market can feel, especially when the goalposts seem to keep moving.

Let’s start with the market insights.

The UK unemployment rate currently sits at 5.1 per cent.

That is 1.2 per cent higher than it was in 2024.

This means there are significantly more people actively seeking roles. This figure doesn't even count those who are currently employed but feel unsettled and want a change.

Competition has effectively doubled.

On average, there are 49 people applying for every single vacancy. Just two years ago, that number was 25.

The time it takes to get recruited has also stretched.

It now takes between 18 and 22 weeks to secure an offer. In 2024, you could expect a result in 10 to 14 weeks.

Essentially, it is taking an extra two months to navigate the process. This is why having a clear strategy is no longer optional. It is a necessity.

I want to share a few specific tips to help you overcome these hurdles and regain your confidence.

Target the right roles. Be crystal clear on your transferable skills and your non-negotiables. When you target roles that truly align with your goals, you see fewer rejections and more successful applications.

Diversify your sources. I strongly suggest avoiding the LinkedIn "Easy Apply" button where possible. These applications often get lost in the ether.

Instead, focus on employee referrals, direct company websites, and specialist recruitment agencies. These channels give you a much better chance of being seen.

Tailor your CV for the modern era. Identify the keywords in the job description and adjust your experience to match. I always advise sticking to the "10-Year Rule."

Anything older than a decade is likely outdated. Focusing on your recent wins helps you score higher with screening software and makes a better impression on hiring managers.

Master the elevator pitch. When an interviewer asks you to talk through your career, do not just read your CV out loud. Keep your answer under two minutes.

Start with a strong credibility statement. Share one or two headlines that showcase your achievements and explain exactly why you are the right fit for the role.

If you implement these techniques, you can rise to the top of the applicant pool.

Take a look at your current strategy.

What could you do differently today to change your results?
