Let's be real : nobody likes rejection.

But when you're deep in a job search, that stream of "thanks, but no thanks" emails can feel relentless.

If you're trying to get back to work, or you're stuck in a toxic job that feels like a prison sentence, seeing those rejections pile up is soul-destroying.

It can make you want to just give up.

This blog's aim is to help you to reframe this.

I want to give you three key strategies that will help you manage the rejection,

stay motivated,

and build a successful job search strategy.

1. Stack the Deck in Your Favour

First, let's focus on reducing the number of rejections you get in the first place.

When you're constantly hearing "no," it has a serious knock-on effect on your motivation.

Here are a few tactical steps to improve your odds from the start.

Apply for 70%+ Matches Only

Be honest with yourself.

If you're looking at a job description and you meet less than 70% of the requirements, you risk being scored poorly by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) or quickly filtered out by a recruiter.

For your own sanity, focus your time and effort on the roles where you are a strong contender.

This helps break the rejection cycle.

Tailor Your CV. Every. Single. Time.

I know this sounds like hard work, but it doesn't need to take an hour.

If you have a solid master CV, you can tailor it in 15 minutes using the right techniques.

That 15 minutes could be the difference between your CV landing in the "yes" pile or the "no" pile.

It puts you higher in the pecking order.

Avoid the 'Easy Apply' Button

This might be a hard one to hear, but that 'Easy Apply' function on LinkedIn is often deprioritised by recruiters.

It's the path of least resistance, and it's swamped with applications.

To reduce the feeling of being ghosted or rejected, take the extra step to apply directly on the company's career page.

2. Reframe the Market (and Your Place in It)

It is a really challenging job market right now.

We're seeing widespread redundancies.

We're seeing people forced back to the office full-time, which is pushing them to look elsewhere.

At the same time, many companies are tightening their belts and being far more restrictive about hiring.

This creates a perfect storm:

More skilled people are seeking work,

and there are fewer jobs available.

The competition is fierce.

So, what does this mean for you?

A 70% Match is Not a Guaranteed Interview

Even when you apply for a job that feels like a 70-80% match, you must set your expectation that in this market, it is still highly likely to be rejected.

This is tough to hear, especially if you're passionate about the role.

But the story you might be telling yourself is "I'm not good enough."

The reality is that someone else might have hit the 90% or 95% mark.

I still believe you should apply. Hiring managers can change requirements or see value in your profile.

But by managing your expectations, the rejection doesn't hit you quite as hard when it comes.

Ghosting Will Happen

This is a major source of frustration for my clients.

You have a great interview,

you send a follow-up,

and then...

silence.

Recruiters are absolutely slammed.

Now, that doesn't let them off the hook.

They should keep candidates informed.

But you have to remember the sheer volume they are dealing with.

If you've chased and haven't had a response, mentally move on.

It's probably a "no."

Don't put your search on hold waiting for an answer that may never come.

3. Accept What You Cannot Control

The final element is acceptance.

This is crucial.

You can do everything right and still not get the job.

Roles Get Pulled

You could be the absolute best fit for the role.

A 110% match.

But if the company decides they no longer need the position or to go in a different direction, they will pull that role.

That has nothing to do with you,

your skills,

or your value.

Requirements Change Mid-Process

A hiring manager might get to the final round and realise they actually need someone more junior, or more senior.

They might discover they need specific industry experience they hadn't considered when they first wrote the job description.

Again, this is completely beyond your control.

Sometimes, You Will Simply Never Know

This is the most difficult one to accept.

You might get knocked back,

or ghosted,

and you will simply never know the reason why.

Accepting these facts as part of the job search journey can hopefully help you acknowledge that this is just part of the process.

You're Still Allowed to Feel Frustrated

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not telling you to switch off your emotions.

We are all human.

Rejection is a part of life,

and it's hard to absorb.

But if you can take these steps, you'll start to regain a sense of control.

  1. Reduce your chances of rejection by being more strategic.
  2. Manage your expectations about this specific market.
  3. Accept that some things are completely out of your hands.

Hopefully, this framework can keep you motivated on the tough days and help you land the new role you deserve.

If you're finding it hard to stay motivated,

or you feel your strategy just isn't working,

let's talk.
