I speak with talented professionals every single day who are navigating a market that has shifted fundamentally.

The competition is fierce, and the old methods of simply throwing your CV out into the ether just do not work anymore.

If you want to rise to the top and secure your next career move, you need a LinkedIn strategy.

LinkedIn is one of the most powerful tools in your job search arsenal,

but only if you use it correctly.

If you want recruiters knocking on your door rather than the other way around,

you have to position yourself as a top-tier candidate.

Here are my top five tips for using LinkedIn to aid your job search and help you find the best opportunities and secure your next role.

1. Optimise Your Profile

Your profile is your digital shop window,

so it needs to reflect the professional you want to present yourself as.

Start with your headline.

It is the first thing people see when you comment or post,

so do not just write "Available for Work".

Make sure your headline lists your primary skills and establishes your credibility immediately.

Next, your 'About' section is your chance to be a bit more personable,

so please do not just copy and paste your CV bio.

Finally, edit your work experience and skills to highlight exactly what you want to be known for now,

and ensure you have a clean, professional banner and image to show your profile is complete and active.

2. Set Up Job Alerts

It is time to stop the scattergun approach of applying for anything and everything.

You can tactically set up job alerts so that you are notified of the absolute best roles for your specific skillset.

Take a step back and filter your alerts by specific job titles, target companies, or even company headcount if you prefer to work for a smaller SME rather than a massive corporate organisation.

By setting these up strategically,

you let the right opportunities come directly to your inbox,

saving you hours of aimless scrolling.

3. Explore Your Existing Connections

This is my absolute favourite part of the process because tapping into the hidden job market is where people see the best results.

Explore your existing network and see what points of contact you have that currently work in the industry, sector, or organisation you wish to join.

Reach out to them and start a genuine conversation.

Ask them what the company culture is like before you ever mention asking for a job.

Building that rapport naturally can lead to a staff referral,

which is highly prioritised by hiring managers and can get your CV straight to the top of the pile.

4. Turn on Your Green #OpenToWork Banner

Turning on the green #OpenToWork banner can feel like a daunting step.

Yes, it will take a bit of work to manage and it may lead to some spam from people trying to sell you services you do not need.

However, being open and transparent about your job search will attract your network to support you.

The goal here is not necessarily to impress recruiters,

as they use backend tools to find you anyway,

but to rally your former colleagues and peers.

If you write a specific post outlining exactly what roles you are looking for,

your network will champion you,

making it more than worth it in the long run.

5. Share Content Related to Your Industry

You do not need to become a social media influencer,

but publishing content shows recruiters and hiring managers that you are genuinely engaged with your profession.

Share content related to your industry to showcase your subject matter expertise.

You can have a go at producing your own relevant posts,

or simply repost articles from industry leaders and add a few lines of your own commentary or opinion.

Above all, avoid using the platform for personal updates or rants.

Keep it strictly professional,

as your ultimate goal is to attract the right kind of attention to secure your

next role.

For those who aren’t the most social media savvy, I get that this can feel a little bit daunting, but if you use your determination to find a new opportunity as your fuel to get this done, you will start to reap the benefits.
