If you get nervous about that initial screening call with a recruiter, this blog is exactly what you need.

I completely understand how daunting it feels to get on the phone when you really want the role.

I am going to talk you through exactly how to prepare and what to expect during the process.

Let us start with why these calls happen in the first place.

You have submitted your CV and the software has ranked you highly.

The recruiter has reviewed your application and thinks you are a fantastic match for the role.

Before they pass your details to a hiring manager, they need to validate your experience.

Frankly, the hiring manager will not be happy if the recruiter sends over a poor fit.

Here are my top strategies to ensure you pass this stage with flying colours.

Have Your Tailored CV in Front of You

Always keep the exact CV you applied with right in front of you during the chat.

You should be tailoring your CV for every single opportunity.

Make sure you reference it closely so you are telling the exact same story you submitted.

Address Your Skill Gaps Head On

Consider what your potential gaps are and how you will overcome them.

This is exactly what the hiring manager will ask the recruiter.

Focus heavily on your transferable skills.

For example, if the role requires Power BI but you only know Tableau, address it confidently.

Explain your advanced level in Tableau and your enthusiasm to master a similar tool quickly.

Navigate the Salary Conversation Wisely

Sometimes you might price yourself out of a role if you are not careful.

If your CV is a great match, the recruiter wants to see if there is any flexibility.

Always ask about the full reward package before making a hard decision.

A better pension, extra annual leave, or a car allowance might easily make up the difference.

Ask the Right Questions

This call is your safe space to ask all the questions you need to.

It might be hard to believe, but the recruiter is completely on your side.

They want you to impress the hiring manager and secure the job.

Ask them the gritty questions now so you do not damage your personal brand later in the formal interview.

Leave a Lasting Impression

When a recruiter passes CVs to the hiring manager, they will be asked how the calls went.

They will always highlight the standout candidates.

Make sure you are on that list by building genuine rapport and showing your professional demeanour.

A Final Piece of Advice

If you are not successful after the screening call, try not to overanalyse it.

There is often a conflicted message or a broken process between the recruiter and the hiring manager.

Do your absolute best, but do not massively pivot your job search strategy over one rejection.

Always ask for feedback,

keep your confidence high,

and continue moving forward.
